Woody Guthrie believed that during WWII his talents were best used to aid the country by singing songs about anti-facism. He insisted on being a USO performer for the troops instead of being drafted into service, but his attempts failed. He joined the Merchant Marines and served as a dishwasher and mess man, but continued to play music for the troops whilst doing so.
