The idea of cigarettes from the early 1900s up until the 1970s always caught my interest. It's amazing to think that even today advertisements for cigarettes find a way to sell products that are known without a doubt to be harmful. I love how ridiculously persuasive these ads are and how they take jabs at things like a man's ability to be a thinker, or a woman's ability to be a mother. I also tossed in a couple of old cartoon references under there to show that even children were marketed to.
From a design standpoint I love the way the ads look. They all have such great qualities. I love the illustration in the Viceroy ad. Also, the illustration in the Ronald Reagan Chesterfield ad is great. Maybe this Christmas I will send everyone a carton of cigarettes accompanied by a copy of that advertisement.
